This page explains how SmartUnscramble generates word lists, validates Scrabble words, calculates scores, and maintains accuracy across all content on the site.
SmartUnscramble uses a server-side word-finding algorithm that searches a curated word database. When you enter letters, our system finds all valid dictionary words that can be formed from those letters — including all subsets (words using fewer than all your letters). Words are returned in order of length and filtered by the game dictionary you select (standard English, Scrabble TWL, or SOWPODS).
Scrabble word validity is determined by the Official Tournament and Club Word List (OWL/TWL) for North American play and SOWPODS/Collins Scrabble Words for international play. We validate words against these dictionaries. Where there is a discrepancy between TWL and SOWPODS, we note which dictionary accepts the word. Our word database is updated periodically to reflect new dictionary editions.
Tile point values follow the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD) standard: A=1, E=1, I=1, O=1, U=1, L=1, N=1, S=1, T=1, R=1, D=2, G=2, B=3, C=3, M=3, P=3, F=4, H=4, V=4, W=4, Y=4, K=5, J=8, X=8, Q=10, Z=10, Blank=0. Word scores shown on SmartUnscramble reflect raw tile values without board bonus squares, since board position varies per game. We display base word value to help players compare and prioritize plays.
All word list pages, guides, and educational content on SmartUnscramble are written to be accurate, practical, and useful for real word game players. Prefix and suffix definitions are sourced from established etymological references. Scrabble strategy tips reflect current expert consensus from tournament Scrabble literature. We do not include offensive or inappropriate content in our word suggestions — our filters remove profanity and slurs from displayed word lists.
The SmartUnscramble word database is reviewed and updated when major Scrabble dictionary editions are released (approximately every 2-4 years). Educational content pages are reviewed for accuracy on an ongoing basis. When new words are added to official dictionaries, we add them to our validation database and update relevant word list pages within 30 days of the official release date.
We strive for accuracy but errors can occur. If you find a word that is incorrectly included or excluded, or any factual error in our content, please contact us. We review all reports and correct verified errors promptly.
