Bonus Squares

DLS
Double Letter
Doubles the value of the letter placed on it
TLS
Triple Letter
Triples the value of the letter placed on it
DWS
Double Word
Doubles the total word score (applied last)
TWS
Triple Word
Triples the total word score (applied last)

Score calculation order: Apply DLS/TLS first (multiplying individual letter values), then apply DWS/TWS (multiplying the entire word total). If a word covers two TWS squares, it scores 9× face value. The bingo bonus (+50 points) is always added after all multipliers.

Scoring Strategy Tips

Play high-value letters on Triple Letter Score squares

A Z or Q on a TLS is worth 30 points for just that one tile. QUIZ on a TLS (Q on TLS) scores Q(30)+U(1)+I(1)+Z(10) = 42 points before any word multiplier.

Save blank tiles for bingos

Blanks are worth 0 points alone, but they make bingos (using all 7 tiles = +50 bonus) dramatically more achievable. A well-timed bingo typically scores 60–100 points — never waste a blank on a 15-point play.

Use high-point letters (J, Q, X, Z) early

Premium tiles become harder to play as the board fills up. Use J, Q, X, and Z while there are still open squares and hook opportunities. Q without a U at game end costs you 10 points.

Two-letter words are your best friend

Two-letter words (OX, AX, QI, JO, XI, EX, ZA) let you play high-value tiles in tight positions. All 107 two-letter words are valid in Scrabble — memorizing them is the single biggest skill improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points is each letter worth in Scrabble?

Letter values range from 0 (blank) to 10 points (Q and Z). Common letters like A, E, I, O, U, L, N, R, S, and T are worth 1 point. Medium letters like D, G (2 pts), B, C, M, P (3 pts), F, H, V, W, Y (4 pts), and K (5 pts). High-value letters: J and X (8 pts), Q and Z (10 pts).

How many tiles are in a Scrabble bag?

A standard Scrabble bag contains 100 tiles: 98 letter tiles and 2 blank tiles. E has the most tiles (12), followed by A and I (9 each). J, K, Q, X, and Z each have only 1 tile.

What are the highest-scoring letters in Scrabble?

Q and Z are both worth 10 points — the maximum. J and X are each worth 8 points. K is worth 5 points. F, H, V, W, and Y are each worth 4 points. These are the letters you want to play on premium squares (Double Letter Score, Triple Letter Score) to maximize your turn.

How do you calculate a Scrabble word score?

Add the face value of each letter. Apply Double Letter Score (DLS) and Triple Letter Score (TLS) squares first, then apply Double Word Score (DWS) and Triple Word Score (TWS) squares. If you use all 7 tiles in one turn (a bingo), add 50 bonus points on top of the word score.

What is a blank tile worth in Scrabble?

Blank tiles (there are 2 in every bag) are worth 0 points regardless of what letter they represent. Their value is flexibility — they can represent any letter, making bingos and high-value words much easier to form. Never waste a blank on a low-scoring play; save it for a 50-point bingo opportunity.

What is the highest possible Scrabble score for a single word?

The theoretical maximum single-word score is over 1,000 points (OXYPHENBUTAZONE across three Triple Word Score squares), but in practice 50-100 points per turn is exceptional. The highest single turn ever recorded in competitive Scrabble was 365 points for QUIXOTRY.
