About Wheel of Fortune
Wheel of Fortune is one of America's longest-running and most-watched game shows, airing since 1975. Contestants spin a wheel to earn money, then guess letters to fill in a hidden word or phrase displayed as a series of blank spaces. Correct consonant guesses earn money; vowels cost $250 to buy.
The show features dozens of puzzle categories including Thing, Place, Person, Phrase, Before & After, What Are You Doing?, and On the Map. Multi-word phrases are separated by visible blank groups.
The bonus round gives the winning contestant a final puzzle with the free letters R, S, T, L, N, and E already revealed. The contestant then picks 3 additional consonants and 1 vowel to help solve a shorter puzzle in 10 seconds.

Best Letters to Guess in Order
English letter frequency determines which guesses reveal the most blanks. Guessing the most common letters first maximizes your information per turn:
Wheel of Fortune Strategy Guide
Guess Vowels Early
Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) structure every word. Pay $250 to buy them — it's worth it. E reveals the most blanks on average. Buy A and E in the first two vowel turns.
Use Category Context
The category dramatically narrows possibilities. "Thing" means a concrete noun. "Phrase" means a common expression. "Before & After" shares a word with another phrase. Use this context to eliminate whole word classes.
Solve Bonus Round Smart
You get R, S, T, L, N, E free. Choose your 3 consonants wisely. G, H, D, C, and M are popular picks. For your vowel, A and I usually reveal the most additional letters beyond E.
Look for Short Words
Short words in multi-word puzzles (A, AN, THE, OF, IN, TO) are often blanked. Spotting a 2-letter blank often means "A" or "AN"; a 3-letter blank often means "THE" or "AND".
Watch for -ING and -TION
Many Wheel of Fortune answers end in -ING (for "What Are You Doing?" or "Thing") and -TION. If the last 3 blanks match "?NG", guessing I and N can be very revealing.
Don't Over-Guess
Consonant guesses that are wrong give your opponent a free spin. Once you can read the puzzle, solve it rather than guessing one more letter. A wrong solve, however, eliminates you from that round.

Can I use this to solve Wheel of Fortune at Home?
Yes — if you're playing along with the TV show or the official Wheel of Fortune app, you can enter your current puzzle's pattern into the Crossword Solver to find all possible answers before making your guess.
What's the easiest way to solve a "Before & After" puzzle?
"Before & After" puzzles share a common word between two phrases (e.g., "NEW YORK CITY LIMITS"). Solve each segment independently using the letter patterns. Identify the overlap word — it's usually a noun that appears in both a left-side and right-side phrase.
