Best Starting Words for Wordle

The best opening guesses cover the most common letters in 5-letter English words. These starters reliably eliminate or confirm 4–5 letters in one guess:

CRANE
SLATE
RAISE
AUDIO
STARE
TRACE

Avoid starting with words that reuse letters (like TEETH or PAPER) — you learn more from five unique letters. After your first guess, use the solver above to narrow down the remaining candidates.

Worked Example: Solving a Wordle in 3 Guesses

  1. 1

    Guess 1 — CRANE

Wordle shows the A green (3rd position) and E yellow. Enter C-R-A-N-E in the solver, mark A green in slot 3, E yellow in slot 5, and C, R, N gray. The solver narrows 270,000+ words to the valid 5-letter candidates.

  2. 2

Guess 2 — pick the top suggestion

The solver ranks the remaining candidates by letter frequency — say it suggests SLATE is invalid (E can’t be in slot 5) and offers ELATED-family alternatives like EXALT or LEAPT. You play LEAPT: L gray, E yellow again, A still green, P gray, T green.

  3. 3

Guess 3 — only one word fits

With A green in slot 3, T green in slot 5, E somewhere but not slots 2 or 5, and C/R/N/L/P eliminated, the candidate list collapses to a single word. That’s the power of constraint stacking — each guess should cut the list by 90% or more.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Marking a repeated letter wrong

If your guess has two E’s and Wordle colors one yellow and one gray, the word contains exactly one E. Mark only the yellow one — marking both makes the solver exclude every valid answer.

Forgetting to update gray letters

Skipping even one eliminated letter leaves dozens of impossible words in your candidate list. Enter every gray tile from every guess.

Guessing from the top of the list blindly

The highest-ranked word is statistically likely, but mid-game it’s often better to pick a candidate that tests the most unresolved letters — even if it ranks lower.

Reusing yellow letters in the same spot

A yellow letter is in the word but NOT in that position. Trying it in the same tile again wastes a guess — the solver never suggests these, so trust its list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Wordle Solver work?

Enter each letter from your current guess, then tap the color button to match what Wordle showed you: green (correct position), yellow (wrong position), or gray (not in word). The solver filters 270,000+ words down to only valid candidates and sorts them by frequency score so the best guesses appear first.

What are the best starting words for Wordle?

Top starting words include CRANE, SLATE, RAISE, AUDIO, and STARE — each covers 4–5 of the most frequent letters in 5-letter English words. Avoid starting with words that repeat letters, since you learn more from 5 unique letters in your first guess.

Can the Wordle Solver guarantee a win?

The solver gives the statistically best guess given your constraints, but cannot guarantee a win in every case since Wordle allows only 6 attempts. In practice, entering constraints from your first 2–3 guesses usually narrows the list to under 10 candidates — excellent odds for the remaining guesses.

Does it work for Quordle, NYT Wordle, and other variants?

Yes. The solver works for any game using standard 5-letter English words — including NYT Wordle, Quordle (enter constraints for each board separately), Dordle, and Wordle Archive. It uses the same official word list.

Is the Wordle Solver free?

Yes — completely free, no sign-up required, works on any device.
