Not all first guesses are equal. We analyzed letter frequencies across thousands of Wordle answers to find the statistically best openers.
The Wordle starting word debate is fierce. Everyone has a favorite, but data shows that some openers consistently outperform others by eliminating more letters per guess on average.
We analyzed letter frequency across all 2,309 official Wordle answer words (five-letter words used as daily answers). We then ranked starting words by how many of the top-15 most frequent letters they covered.
Hard-mode players (those who must use confirmed letters in every subsequent guess) benefit most from a consistent, information-rich opener. Casual players can rotate starters freely. Using the same opener daily does make your performance more predictable and comparable.
Some analysts argue that optimizing for average information gain is less important than adaptability. A player who can read clues well and choose responsive second and third guesses will often outperform someone rigidly following an optimal first-guess script.
