How Crossword Solvers Work

Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes when you enter a pattern like C??SSW?RD? We explain the algorithm that finds your answers.

When you type a pattern like C??SSW?RD into a crossword solver, the tool finds every word in its database that matches that exact structure. Here is how the algorithm behind that works.

Pattern Matching with Wildcards

Each ? in your pattern represents any single letter. The solver converts your pattern into a regular expression — a search rule the database can evaluate. C??SSW?RD becomes the rule: starts with C, then any two letters, then SSW, then any one letter, then RD.

The Word Database

SmartUnscramble uses a PostgreSQL database of over 270,000 real English words. When you submit a pattern, a SQL query filters for words of the correct length whose characters match your known positions. The database returns matches in milliseconds.

Length Is Critical

The number of squares in your crossword answer is always known in advance. The solver uses this length to filter candidates before applying the pattern. A six-letter pattern will never match five-letter or seven-letter words, making results highly precise.

How to Get Better Results

  • Fill in as many crossing letters as possible before searching.
  • Use the clue field to provide context — it helps narrow semantic candidates.
  • If you get too many results, try to confirm one more crossing letter first.

Why Pattern Solvers Beat Manual Guessing

Even experienced crossword solvers mentally search only a few hundred words at most. A pattern solver checks every word in the dictionary in under a second. Combined with crossing letter clues, this makes solving even difficult grids much faster and more enjoyable.
