Q Without U Words: The Complete Scrabble List

Holding a Q tile with no U is not a disaster — if you know these words. QI, QOPH, QANAT, and QIGONG can turn a losing rack into a winning play.

Drawing the Q tile in Scrabble without any U tiles often feels like a death sentence for your turn. It does not have to be. A small but important list of Q-without-U words can turn this seemingly unplayable tile into a high-scoring opportunity.

Why Q Without U Words Are Essential

The Q tile is worth 10 points — tied with Z as the highest-value tile in the game. Knowing Q-without-U words means you can play it productively even when no U appears anywhere on your rack or the board.

Q Without U Words by Length

  • 2 letters: QI (the most important — memorize this one first)
  • 3 letters: QAT (a plant chewed as a stimulant in East Africa)
  • 4 letters: QOPH (also QOPH — the 19th letter of the Hebrew alphabet)
  • 5 letters: QANAT (an ancient irrigation tunnel system)
  • 6 letters: QIGONG (a Chinese system of breathing exercises)
  • 7 letters: QINTAR (a monetary unit of Albania)

Tips for Playing the Q Tile

  • Memorize QI first — it is a two-letter word that fits almost anywhere.
  • QAT is valid in Collins SOWPODS but check your tournament word list.
  • If U tiles are on the board, plan a QU play like QUIZ, QUIP, or QUARTZ.
  • In desperate situations, trade the Q rather than waste a turn with a low-scoring play.

High-Scoring Q Words (With U)

When you do have a U tile, Q becomes one of the most powerful plays on the board. QUIZ (22 pts), QUARTZ (24 pts), QUINZE (24 pts), and QAIZEN are devastating on bonus squares. Plan your rack specifically to pair Q with U whenever possible.
